As part of our session on statistics today, students were asked to analyse data represented in a bar graph and pictograph. Kaleb and Izzy were keen to share their findings with you on this particular activity.

Culture And Where We Come From Matters...

Inquiry Learning.... Purposeful Learning

Today Team Respect took a look at some lines of inquiry that they would like to follow up.

This is harder than it sounds as the children had to think about a topic that they were generally interested in, and the topic had to be one that they can research the by finding information in books and online.

After quite a bit of discussion and sharing each student came up with one question. Take a look at the picture to the right to see the different inquiry topics the children want to research.

The next step was to generate questions of the original thought. Once again, this was harder than it sounds. But we got there and have a starting point.

In Room 10 we want to make our learning purposeful and engaging. We know there are times when we will have to learn things that might not be as interesting as our own inquiry project. But, the skills we learn will be used across all the subjects, giving us the skills we need to be successful.

How A Shape Can Be A Copycat!

We are learning about transformations
(reflection, rotation and translation, or enlargement).

Yesterday in our maths session we were given a 'copy cat' problem to solve. We had to investigate if a shape could be made into the same shape but as a bigger version of itself.

This morning, Izzy took the shapes and showed the class how a square, triangle and rectangle (oblong) could be a copy cat.

Can you work out why these shapes are copycats? Leave a comment below and we will tell you if you are right!

We know that translation means moving.... without rotating or reflecting... just moving.

We know that reflection means every point is the same distance from the centre line and the same size as the original image.

We know that rotation means turning around a centre point.

What Sort Of Mindset Do You Have?

Do you have a FIXED or GROWTH mindset?

We are learning about how our mindset can affect how we think about ourselves,and the impact if can have on our learning.

A group of 10 children had a go at breaking down what they thought mindset meant.

After that we came up with things we say to ourselves when we have a fixed mindset.

To help us be better learners, we thought up some positive ways of motivating ourselves when we feel learning is hard.

We now know the difference between a FIXED and a GROWTH mindset.

We know we can change the way we think about our learning by talking to ourselves in a positive way.

After all, thoughts become things......

We are learning about idioms!

We are collaborating with a school in Hong Kong called the Australian International School Hong Kong (AISHK). We are excited about learning and sharing together.

Our first challenge is to share what we know about idioms. At the moment we don't know many so we are going on a research mission this week to find out some.

Today we learnt that an idiom is when there are word combinations which have a different meaning to the literal meaning of each word... in other words... don't take it seriously, it's a play on words!

We will share our knowledge with our new friends in at AISHK on Friday after lunch. We can't wait to meet everyone online. Being a 21st Century learner is exciting and gives us a purpose for our learning.
